The inspiration around Hartford was born in New York City in 1979 when Yves Chareton had a vision to recreate vintage shirts from the 1950's: from the ubiquitous "button down" shirt in faded plaids and bright oxfords to "westerns" in raw denim or "work-shirts" in chambray. Hartford was an instant success, and fans such as Bruce Springsteen started ordering dozens of shirts for his tours. The brand became synonymous with quality fabrics, rich colors ranges, refined details, and classic styles that have been reinvented to become hip and modern.
Within a few years, the Hartford collection became a complete menswear line. In 2000, convinced by customers and journalists, Yves decided to expand by launching a beachwear collection, then a women's collection, and finally a children's collection. The company now owns 10 boutiques in Europe, and Hartford can be found in hundreds of high-end, contemporary shops around the world such as Printemps & Bon March in Paris, Liberty of London, and Isetan in Tokyo.
